Four area teams advance in the MHSAA baseball and softball districts

Several Michigan High School Athletic Association baseball and softball district champions were crowned across the state during the first weekend of June. Three baseball and two softball districts were contested in the South Bend area.

In Division 2, Edwardsburg baseball (20-9) won its home district by eliminating Sturgis 12-2 in a semifinal and Three Rivers 4-3 in the championship game the same day. The Eddies trailed 3-2 late before scoring one run each in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. Brady Cook drove in the winning run with one out in the seventh. Edwardsburg will now face Richard Gull Lake of Otsego in a regional semifinal on Gull Lake on Wednesday afternoon. Gull Lake and Otsego play Monday afternoon.

Niles baseball also won a Division 2 district title with a 5-2 win over St. Joseph in the championship game Sunday. The Vikings advanced on Saturday with a 13-1 (5 innings) victory over Berrien Springs. Acie Kirtdoll and Carson Rachels each had two RBIs for Niles (23-8), which will next play Holland Christian of South Haven on Wednesday in a regional semifinal at Holland High School. Christian and Haven play Monday afternoon.

Finally, in Division 3, Bridgman won the district hosted by Constantine, defeating Buchanan 7-1 in the final. The Bucks had advanced by eliminating Brandywine 2-1 in the semifinals. Bridgman defeated Cassopolis 10-2 in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Softball District Results

Buchanan, who finished the season ranked No. 3 in the final Division 3 coaches poll, won a district championship with three wins. It defeated Cassopolis 17-0 in the quarterfinals and survived a competitive effort by host Brandywine 6-5 in the semifinals before defeating Bridgman 14-4 (5 innings) in the final on Saturday.

Camille Lozmack led the Bucks’ (32-5) offense with three RBIs against Cassopolis, four in the win over Brandywine and two against Bridgman. Hannah Herman also collected eight RBIs this week, five against Cassopolis and three against Bridgman.

Buchanan – who reached the D3 state title game in 2021 and the state quarterfinals last year – will play Hanover-Horton in a regional semifinal this Saturday at 10 a.m. in Constantine. The other semifinal between Homer and Bronson follows, with the championship game being played after both semifinals have concluded. The estimated start time for the title match is 2:00 PM

From April: Buchanan softball circles Michigan state championship date

Another district champion was crowned in Edwardsburg in Division 2. The Eddies (25-11) posted three wins on the week, including two on Friday, to claim the district title. They defeated Dowagiac 6-3 in a quarterfinal last Tuesday, followed by a 15-0 win over Sturgis and a 5-4 win over Three Rivers in the semifinals and finals, respectively. The Eddies took the lead for good against Three Rivers with an RBI single by Sydney Klaer in the fifth inning.

Edwardsburg will host the regional on Saturday. The Eddies will play No. 2 (D2) Vicksburg in the second semifinal around noon. In the first semifinal, Marshall will face either Lakeshore or St. Joseph, who will play in their district final Monday night. The regional championship game starts at 2 p.m
