Alabama avoided it two days ago, beating Duke 2-1 in a game that saw two teams lose their WCWS openers. In the win, Marlie Giles hit a solo home run to right center field in the sixth inning to break a 1–1 deadlock and ultimately give her team the victory. It was Giles’ seventh home run of the season. Giles’ heroics were made possible by pitcher Kayla Beaver, who threw a perfect 3 2/3 inning to end the game, striking out three Duke batters.

The Tide are one of six teams remaining in the field and, as the No. 14 national seed, the lowest remaining seed (as was the case when the WCWS began).

It will be the fourth time this season that Alabama and Florida play each other, with the Tide going 1-2 in a three-game series between the teams from March 9-11 in Tuscaloosa.

The Gators, the No. 4 national seed, are eliminated after beating No. 5 seed Oklahoma State 1-0 in their opener, but fall to No. 1 overall seed Texas 10-0 on Saturday in a matchup in which the run rule took effect in the fifth inning. Florida is 52-14 overall this season and has had just one multi-game losing streak in that span.

The winner between the Tide and Gators will face three-time reigning national champion Oklahoma, which has yet to lose at this year’s WCWS.
