Caribou-Targhee National Forest to start selling firewood permits –

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) – The Caribou-Targhee National Forest will begin selling personal-use firewood permits beginning June 3, 2024.

When purchasing a firewood permit, forest visitors receive the permit, tags, the Caribou-Targhee National Forest terms and conditions, and a ranger district firewood map to assist in locating firewood in the appropriate area.

“Firewood is an important resource for many people in Idaho,” said Tom Silvey, timber program manager for Caribou-Targhee National Forest. “It benefits local communities and allows us to dispose of material that would otherwise incur costs to burn or dispose of.”

Firewood can be purchased for $6.25 per cord with a minimum purchase of four cords. The minimum cost for a firewood permit is $25. Additional cords can be purchased for $6.25 per cord, up to a maximum of eight cords per household. Other forest product permits will also be available, including transplant permits and post and pole permits. Contact your local ranger district for availability. Permits are valid until November 30, 2024 and must be in possession during the collection of forest products with the tags visible during transport of the timber.

Firewood permits only allow harvesting of lying or standing deadwood. It is important to use firewood from local sources to prevent the spread of invasive species. Firewood availability may be limited due to decreases in insect and disease activity and other naturally occurring factors that cause dead trees for firewood. On less traveled roads, firewood is more likely to be available. Expect to travel further and search more than in years past.

Not all lands in the National Forests are open to cutting firewood. Check the firewood map to make sure you are in an area where cutting is allowed. Not all land within the forest boundary is owned by the government. It is your responsibility to ensure that you do not enter private property.

Firewood permits are available at district forest ranger offices and participating suppliers. A list of suppliers, as well as cutting information and maps are available HERE. Contact your local ranger district office for additional options for paying for and obtaining firewood permits:
