Crews were able to extinguish the fire just before 11am before it spread to a four-storey residential building. There was serious damage to the carport and some items outside the house suffered heat damage.

Before firefighters arrived, an off-duty Aurora Fire Department captain entered the building and rescued a dog.

What caused the fire is under investigation. Fire officials said it’s a good reminder to make sure all barbecue coals and grills are cool before dumping them in a dumpster.
