Muncie woman seriously injured when hit by SUV; driver flees

MUNCIE, Ind. – A Muncie motorist struck and seriously injured a pedestrian before fleeing, police said.

Crystal Star Glaze, 40, was arrested Tuesday evening on suspicion of driving under the influence resulting in serious injury and leaving the scene of an accident.

According to an affidavit, Glaze was driving a 2016 Buick Encore on Hackley Street, just north of Memorial Drive, on Tuesday around 9:50 p.m. when she struck a 46-year-old woman walking next to her bicycle and another woman.

A witness reported seeing the victim “tumbling” to the ground after being struck by the SUV, which was traveling north on Hackley Street before turning right on Ninth Street.

According to court documents, the victim was taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where doctors determined she had suffered three brain bleeds and a “large open fracture” to her lower right leg.

A short time later, a witness contacted emergency services and reported that the SUV involved in the incident was parked outside Newell Brands in the 1500 block of East Ninth Street.

Police observed the vehicle with “significant damage to the front bumper, hood and windshield” and determined it was registered to Glaze, who was at the business where she works.

Glaze reportedly told police she “hit something” with her SUV before arriving for her work shift.

“Why did people think they had to walk down the middle of the ——- road?” she also reportedly asked an officer.

According to the affidavit, a breath test measured Glaze’s blood alcohol level at 0.167. In Indiana, drivers with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 or higher are considered intoxicated.

Glaze was released from the Delaware County Jail early Wednesday after posting $25,000 bail. The Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office will determine whether formal charges will be filed against her.

Court records show no previous charges have been filed against the Muncie woman.
