Arlene Knox Obituary – Boulder, CO (1929-2015)

Arlene Dessa Knox died of lung cancer on June 4, 2015 at her home in Boulder, Colorado. She was born on April 17, 1929 (along with her twin sister, Ilene) to Joseph Benjamin Oakleaf and Myrtle Anna Hucke in Mound Valley Township, Kansas. Arlene graduated from Labette County High School (Altamont, Kansas) in 1947 and from Coffeyville Community College in 1949 with a business degree. She worked for the Coffeyville Board of Education until her marriage to her lifelong partner, James Knox, on September 10, 1952. They moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1961. Arlene worked for Ball Brothers and Jacobs Corporation. In retirement, she and Jim traveled to all 50 states – 49 in their RV with their small dog Bunny. Arlene was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Boulder, ABWA, Beta Sigma Phi and Eastern Star. She won many awards and honors, but none were more important than the people who touched her life, however briefly. Arlene loved to cook and was often seen working in her garden. She was busy planning menus and garden changes until the end. Arlene was predeceased by Jim Knox, her husband of 62 years; an infant son, Bruce Lynn; and a great-grandson, Mason. She is survived by her twin sister, Ilene Bussman of Mound Valley, Kansas; her children: Deborah Knox of Boulder, Colorado and Douglas Knox (Kathy) of Selah, Washington; her grandsons: Matthew (Katy), Samuel and Joseph; and great-grandchildren: Taylor, Tanner, Lane and Madelyn; plus many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, June 27, at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Boulder. Donations in Arlene’s honor can be made to Tru Community Care Hospice or a charity of your choice.
