Why Sherrone Moore is excited Michigan football LB Jaishawn Barham

DETROIT- It’s been quiet outside of Ann Arbor, but inside Schembechler Hall, the coaching staff is excited about having a Big Ten standout join the Wolverines this offseason.

Jaishawn Barham was a freshman All-American and two-time All-Big Ten player before leaving Maryland for football at Michigan, and word is going around Ann Arbor that the maize and blue may have quietly acquired a first-round caliber linebacker . Barham didn’t register many stats in the spring game, but you could see the impact he has and how instinctive he is as a player.

On Thursday, WolverinesWire asked Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore what he’s seen from Barham and how good he could be, and he was ecstatic about what he brought to the table.

“He’s really good,” Moore said. “He was the guy who, when we played Maryland every year, he thought, ‘We’re dealing with No. 1.’ To have him on our team now is super great.

‘When you talk about a phenomenal human being, the child says nothing. He just puts his head down and works. And when he’s on the field, you feel him, so we’re super excited.”

Barham and fellow mid-major Ernest Hausmann are somewhat known commodities, but the question is who will spell them this season as Michigan is known to be digging deep into their rotation.

Moore says two stand out and should be in the mix, but he leaves the door open for others to earn some playing time down the road.

“Yeah, Jaydon Hood’s, and Jimmy Rolder too,” Moore said. “And then you have some young guys who played and you had to see it. So these are the two most important ones behind it now. But we’ll see what happens.”

Michigan’s freshmen recently reported and are now beginning the acclimation process. Summer conditioning will take place for the entire team before fall camp starts in late July or early August.
