More than 4 million chickens killed on Iowa farms due to bird flu

Bird flu has devastated chicken farmers in Iowa and Minnesota. The latest hit requires more than 4 million chickens to be killed on an Iowa farm.

Highly contagious and fatal bird flu has been diagnosed in a flock of 4.2 million egg-laying chickens.

The commercial laying herd is located in Sioux County in northwestern Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says this is the “first confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a commercial poultry flock this year in Iowa.”

The bird flu outbreak has been ongoing since early 2022 and is mainly spread by migratory birds that can transmit the virus asymptomatically.

Both Minnesota and Iowa have reported infected poultry flocks in the past month, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Affected facilities in Minnesota include four commercial turkey facilities and one commercial egg-laying operation, culminating in approximately 1.5 million affected birds.

While Minnesota has suffered more than triple the number of infected flocks compared to Iowa since the outbreak began, Iowa’s substantial egg-producing industry has resulted in nearly three times the total number of birds affected.

Iowa has the distinction of being the top egg producing state in the country.

In Iowa, more than 23 million birds in 52 flocks have been culled since the beginning of 2022.

During the previous bird flu outbreak, which hit U.S. farms in early 2022, egg prices saw a dramatic increase, more than doubling over the course of the year.

This price escalation culminated in January 2023, when the average cost for a dozen eggs peaked at an astonishing $4.82.

Many of us born and raised in the city are not fully aware of the special meanings behind the various traditions of farmers and ranchers.

A good example is that of a boot placed on a fence post.
